The Internet, the Educator and
the Professional Organisation
by Professor John Willinsky
University of British Columbia
Prof Willinsky's talk focused on the new developments and challenges posed by vast amounts of information now being carried on the internet. It addressed question of access to academic research as a resource for educators, while exploring new experimental systems intended to help connect theory, research, and practice in more productive ways than have happened in the past. The potential of such systems was discussed with an eye to better understanding how the internet can serve busy but interested educators more effectively.
Prof Willinsky is currently the Pacific Press Professor of Literacy & Technology and Distinguished University Scholar in the Department of Language & Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Examples of his work, including demonstrations of the open source software he has developed, can be found at the Public Knowledge Project website.
