President's Message (2000)

by Oliver Seet
President, ELLTA(S)

Dear colleagues

An Association tailor-made for teachers of English Language and Literature will be launched on Saturday 21 October 2000.

Run primarily by teachers, teacher educators and educationists, the Association will provide teachers with an avenue for meeting other teachers with special interests, look at real problems teachers encounter in the classroom, conduct useful seminars and workshops that members request for and inform members of useful resources and new developments in the field.

We believe that the launching of the English Language and Literature Association in Singapore (ELLTA(S)) is timely for the following reasons:

  1. The declining standard of English must be a cause of concern especially for English teachers.
  1. There is no association in Singapore at present specifically for teachers of English Language and Literature, although there are two for lecturers in tertiary institutions. Almost every other country where English is used has such an Association.

The success of ELLTA(S) will, however, depend on you and the support you give it. Please help us realise the vision we have of setting up an Association that will really be of value to teachers like you.

The Membership Subscription Form is provided in the brochure which is attached. We hope you will come for the launching ceremony as well as the first talk on the "Role of Grammar in Language Teaching".

Please complete the Membership Subscription Form and post it back to us as soon as possible!

With best wishes,
Assoc Prof Oliver Seet
Pro-tem President
